We Answer
1. Have enjoyed looking at your web-site. Would like to know if you in fact install kitchens as well or does the buyer have to arrange this..
Answer: We have installed kitchens in the past and we will still do so locally, but only if we dont have a full order book. On delivery we spend some time with the person installing the kitchen and show them where everything goes, after that there are rarely problems.

3. Hi, Am I understanding correctly that you supply unpainted kitchens? Do you ever supply them ready painted if I specified a colour?.
Answer: We always prime the kitchens as much as we can before installation, only a very small amount of priming is left to do on site.
We sometimes paint the inside of the cabinets before delivery, it depends on our workload and the requirements of the customer.
We have in the past done one or two coats of the finish colour in the workshop but we have difficulty keeping the workshop dust free while the paint dries, extra care has to be taken with wrapping the units for delivery, paint is likely to be damaged on installation unless extreme care is taken and some parts must be painted after assembly. We would always choose to finish paint after installation as the best option, better, easier and less expensive.

4. How strong is MDF compared to timber - I am thinking in particular about weight bearing capacity of cupboard shelves etc..
Answer: I would say not as strong, or not as stiff, size for size, but there is not much in it. In fact about the same as chipboard. However our shelves are 18mm instead of 15mm and for wide units we use 25mm thick shelves.

11. I love the colour of the kitchen at The Barn. Can you tell me what it is and who makes it?.
Answer: It is a Farrow and Ball colour, Green-Blue. We used their water based paint but they do not recommend the use of this paint in kitchens.
Note that the colour you see on our website depends on how your monitor is set up.

12. I notice that you have discontinued your zinc worktops. Can you tell me why that is please.
I would also like to know the cost per metre. I am planning a new kitchen for my barn conversion in Cornwall. Many thanks,
Sue Miller .
Answer: We stopped doing them because there was no demand at the time and it was getting difficult to get hold of the zinc. They are not to everyones taste.
Sorry. Most of our customers go for solid wood or granite but the latter is very expensive.
If you or anyone reading this knows of another supplier of zinc worktops then I will happily passs the work on

Answer: Yes, we have been making kitchens in solid wood for 25 years. They are a lot more expensive and maybe unsuitable for diy installation. We have not sold these over the internet.

14. why are your kitchens so inexpensive?.
Answer: I am pleased that you think they are inexpensive! They are inexpensive because.....
..We have many years of experience in making furniture in MDF and we have developed a versatile kitchen cabinet construction that we can produce quite quickly using inexpensive jigs.
..Our workshop is paid for and we have very low overheads.
..we have no showroom, employ no salesmen, produce no brochures, etc.

15. I am certainly very interested in purchasing one of your kitchens as we are about to enlarge our kitchen. We currently have roughly 10 meters of units and will require a further 10 meters of units. I am however concerned about cost and wondered if you would consider supplying doors only for our existing units and supplying new units and doors for the extended area?.
Answer: Yes we are able to supply doors for your existing units with new units to match. You also might like to consider rearranging the existing units. You can then include 18mm uprights between cabinets and maybe new end panels, with improvement in appearance (see design manual)
This work would require careful measuring up, both of the room and of the existing units, and there may be a small price increase for making the new cabinets the same height as the old ones. Also the new doors would require drilling for the hinges on site.

17. Is MDF "Green"?.
Answer: Well colourwise, since we use moisture reistant MDF it is in fact green, or has a green coloured core at least.
However your are really asking whether it is environmentaly friendly. It is made with forest thinnings from sustainable cultivated forests, thinnings which would otherwise be wasted of go into the pulp industry. So the answer, in our humble opinion is "yes".

19. Is MDF hazardous to health? .
Answer: The answer to this is "No", qualified as follows.
When working with MDF dust should be kept to a minimum and if necessary an appropriate breathing mask worn. This is important for those working frequently with MDF and most hardwoods. However after installation there is no hazard and appropriate working practices will keep dust created during installation to a minimum. Any possible danger is restricted to people who work with MDF every day.

20. Can you send me a brochure?.
Answer: Sorry no, we do not produce one. The production and printing of a brochure would cost a considerable amount of money, and this would inevitably increase the cost of our kitchens. A brochure would only contain the same information that is available on this website. If you have a slow internet connection please email us and we will send you a CD of the website to save download time. If you require more information please email or ring us.
